Taj uvrije\u017een pogled na objekte u orbiti oko na\u0161e zvijezde do\u017eivio je krupnu promjenu 2006. godine, kad je Me\u0111unarodna astronomska unija (IAU &#8211; International Astronomical Union) izglasala novu definiciju planeta. On svoju orbitu, naime, dijeli s velikim brojem malenih tijela iz Kuiperova pojasa, \u010diji je dio. Stoga je progla\u0161en tzv. patuljastim planetom, a tim su se nazivom jo\u0161 okitili i Ceres, Eris, Haumea i Makemake.<\/p>\n<p>Ova definicija, iako je jasno odredila uloge unutar na\u0161eg sustava, nije primjenjiva izvan njega. Ekstrasolarni planeti &#8211; planeti koji kru\u017ee oko neke druge zvijezde &#8211; padaju ve\u0107 na prvom uvjetu, jer niti jedan ne kru\u017ei oko Sunca. Dovoljno je procijeniti masu mati\u010dne zvijezde, masu planeta i vrijeme njene orbite, \u0161to se mo\u017ee u\u010diniti za prakti\u010dki 99% do sada otkrivenih planeta. Temeljem tih podataka relativno se brzo mo\u017ee ustanoviti je li planet sferi\u010dan i je li o\u010distio svoj orbitalni put od drugih tijela. IAU jo\u0161 nije razmotrila prijedlog profesora Margota, no mo\u017ee se o\u010dekivati kako \u0107e uskoro prihvatiti ne\u0161to sli\u010dno kako bi se jasnije razlu\u010dila novootkrivena nebeska tijela.<\/p>\n<p>Margotovim\u00a0dodatkom Pluton se i dalje ne uklapa u definiciju planeta, dapa\u010de. Astronomi su izra\u010dunali putanje svih planeta na\u0161eg sustava milijunima godina u budu\u0107nost i svima su ostale nepromijenjene; Plutonova je orbita na dugi rok potpuno nepredvidiva.<\/p>\n<p>Odgovor na pitanje je li Pluton planet ili ne mo\u017eda je najbolje dao poznati astrofizi\u010dar <strong>Neil DeGrasse Tyson<\/strong>. On je ustvrdio da je Pluton istog sastava kao i ostatak Kuiperova pojasa.
