Nekoliko mjeseci kasnije Plutonu je administrativnom odlukom ukinut status planeta i prekvalificiran je u patuljaste planete; promjeni oznake unato\u010d, va\u017enost istra\u017eivanja ovog dijela svemira od tada je iznimno porasla. Koli\u010dina prikupljenih podataka o Plutonovu sustavu enormna je; zavr\u0161etak downloada s letjelice predvi\u0111en je tek za po\u010detak sljede\u0107e godine, a analiza istih potrajat \u0107e jo\u0161 godinama potom.<\/p>\n<p>Napu\u0161tanjem Plutona, ciljevi misije preba\u010deni su s primarnih na sekundarne: istra\u017eivanje Kuiperova pojasa, odnosno pronala\u017eenje nebeskog tijela kojeg bi <em>New Horizons<\/em> na svom putu mogao posjetiti.<\/p>\n<p>Unazad nekoliko godina astronomi su intenzivno koristili svemirski teleskop <em><strong>Hubble<\/strong><\/em>, tra\u017ee\u0107i adekvatan cilj za ovu sondu. Sredinom 2014. godine su uspjeli, prona\u0161av\u0161i nebesko tijelo koje \u0107e, uz minimalne korekcije putanje, biti na putu <em>New Horizonsu<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Procjene ka\u017eu kako 2014 69MU ima promjer izme\u0111u 30 i 45 kilometara, dok mu je potrebno 293 godine da napravi revoluciju oko Sunca. Pretpostavlja se kako je rije\u010d o krhotini odba\u010denoj u zakutke sustava nakon formiranja plinovitih divova Jupitera, Saturna, Urana i Neptuna. To je najve\u0107e poznato tijelo u radijusu kretanja <em>New<\/em> <em>Horizonsa<\/em>.
