Dug je oko 140 km. Otkriven je za vrijeme ekspedicije koju su vodili stru\u010dnjaci s <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/explorations\/18deepsearch\/logs\/aug23\/aug23.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management i United States Geological Survey. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Na plovilu <em>Atlantis<\/em> htjeli su istra\u017eiti tajanstveni dio ju\u017enog dijela Atlantskog oceana. Uz pomo\u0107 podmornice <em>Alvin<\/em> potvrdili su postojanje koralja iz dubokih mora koji pripada vrsti <em>Lophelia<\/em> <em>pertusa<\/em>. Znanstvenici su za\u010du\u0111eni \u0161to je ovaj koraljni greben ostao skriven toliko dugo vremena i \u0161to ga do sada jo\u0161 nitko nije prona\u0161ao.<\/p>\n<p>Ovdje nije rije\u010d o tropskom koralju koji \u017eivi u simbiozi s algama ve\u0107 o koralju iz hladnog mora koji pre\u017eivljava bez algi. Oni se obi\u010dno nalaze na dubini od 40 do 2000 m. Uz pomo\u0107 polipa hvataju hranu koja se jako brzo kre\u0107e uz pomo\u0107 morskih struja.<\/p>\n<p>Koralj L. pertusa je prona\u0111en u pone\u0161to pli\u0107em podru\u010dju bli\u017ee obale. \u017divi na temperaturi od oko 8C. To znanstvenicima predstavlja najve\u0107u pote\u0161ko\u0107u prilikom prou\u010davanja koralja iz hladnih mora.<\/p>\n<p>Ovo otkri\u0107e je jako va\u017eno jer su koraljni grebeni mjesta velike bio raznolikosti i va\u017ean dio hranidbenog lanca.
